Degrees
The
Department of Mathematics and Physical Sciences at LSUA offers courses in six academic disciplines (mathematics, statistics, chemistry, physics, geology, and physical science) and the Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. In addition to this degree, students may also pursue an Associate of Science degree and a Bachelor of General Studies (mathematics concentration) degree on campus. The department offers two minors: the Minor in Mathematics and the Minor in Geology. These minors provide students majoring in other subjects an opportunity to pursue their interest in mathematics or geology while they major in another subject area.

Bachelor of Science in MathematicsThe Bachelor of Science in Mathematics is designed to meet the needs of students with a variety of career goals. Potential employers of graduates with this degree include state and federal government, banks, insurance and marketing companies, consulting firms, and computer and communications companies.
At the heart of the program is a forty-two hour curriculum in Mathematics, one that allows students to acquire a broad understanding of fundamental mathematics concepts and critical thinking skills and to demonstrate their ability to communicate and research mathematical information. In pursuit of the Bachelor of Science degree, students may take courses in Algebra, Analysis, Topology, Number Theory, Geometry, Probability, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, and the History of Mathematics. In addition to the major requirements, the degree includes fifty-one hours of electives. This ensures flexibility in the degree, serving students with a variety of career goals, including high school mathematics teacher, research scientist, forensic analyst, financial advisor, and many more. This degree will also provide appropriate preparation to those who choose to pursue graduate studies in mathematics.
Secondary Education CertificationThe
Department of Education offers a
Minor in Education[pdf], which if completed with the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, allows students to become state certified to teach secondary school mathematics. Bachelor of General Studies: Mathematics ConcentrationThe Bachelor of General Studies degree program is designed for students interested in inter-disciplinary education. Individualized and flexible, the program is ideal for students who wish to design their own course of study, change majors late in their academic career, attend college irregularly, or pursue a non-traditional degree program. With the Mathematics concentration, the degree offers students both a substantial education (30 hours) in the study of mathematics as an academic discipline and a strong background in a range of other disciplines in the humanities, sciences, and social sciences. Each graduate acquires communication and research skills and a strong foundation to critical thinking.
Associate of ScienceThe Associate of Science degree enables students to demonstrate completion of a coherent body of course work. The degree is ideal for students planning to transfer and for those who want to signify completion of two years of concentrated study. Students interested in mathematics, engineering, biological and physical sciences, computer science, accounting, business, allied health, and technology should consider this degree.
